The Role
Our client is seeking a meticulous Registered Dental Hygienst to elevate preventive and periodontal care within a patient-centered practice in Calgary, Alberta. You will deliver comprehensive hygiene services—thorough assessments, periodontal charting, risk screening, and evidence-based prophylaxis—while exercising sound clinical judgement to tailor care plans for patients with varying periodontal statuses, from healthy to Stage III/IV periodontitis. Success is reflected in measurable outcomes such as improved bleeding indices, pocket depth stabilization, adherence to re-care intervals, and consistently accurate documentation and radiographic records.
In this role, you will manage a full hygiene schedule with efficiency and empathy, coordinating clinically with dentists on diagnosis and treatment sequencing, and collaborating closely with assistants and front office teams to optimize chair turnover, sterilization flow, and recall effectiveness. You will utilize current IPAC protocols, calibrated periodontal metrics, radiographic technique standards, and behavior change strategies to drive sustained oral health improvements. Patient education—covering biofilm control, caries and periodontal risk, fluoride and desensitizing therapies, and tobacco cessation—will be integral to your daily practice.
The ideal hygienist brings confidence in local anesthesia and adjunctive therapies (e.g., subgingival irrigation, localized antimicrobials) to support comfortable, definitive care. Proficiency with digital radiography and practice management software will support precise charting, treatment acceptance, and clear communication. You will contribute to continuous quality improvement, participate in recall optimization, and uphold Alberta regulatory requirements. Your professional presence will enhance patient trust, improve treatment acceptance, and strengthen continuity of care across the practice.
What You'll Do
- Perform comprehensive hygiene assessments, including extra/intraoral exams, periodontal charting, and caries/periodontal risk assessments
- Deliver evidence-based prophylaxis, scaling and root planing, and selective polishing with ultrasonic and hand instrumentation
- Administer local anesthesia and desensitizing agents in accordance with Alberta authorization and clinic protocols
- Capture and evaluate diagnostic-quality digital radiographs (bitewings, PA, FMX, panoramic as applicable) and intraoral photos
- Provide individualized patient education on biofilm control, interdental care, fluoride therapies, nutrition, and tobacco cessation
- Implement and document periodontal maintenance programs and re-care intervals; monitor outcomes (BOP, PD, CAL)
- Place localized antimicrobials or perform subgingival irrigation when clinically indicated and permitted
- Maintain meticulous clinical records, periodontal charts, and treatment notes in dental software; support case presentation
- Adhere strictly to IPAC standards, including instrument reprocessing, sterilization monitoring, and operatory turnover
- Collaborate with dentists and the administrative team on treatment planning, scheduling efficiency, and recall optimization
What You Bring
- Diploma or Bachelor’s degree in Dental Hygiene from a Commission on Dental Accreditation of Canada (CDAC)–accredited program
- Successful completion of the National Dental Hygiene Certification Board (NDHCB) examination
- Current registration and good standing with Alberta’s dental hygiene regulatory college; authorization for local anesthesia or willingness to obtain
- 1–3+ years of clinical dental hygiene experience in general or periodontal practice preferred (new grads with strong clinical rotations considered)
- Proficiency in periodontal assessment, non-surgical periodontal therapy (SRP), and maintenance protocols
- Skilled with digital radiography, periodontal charting, and practice management software (e.g., Dentrix, AbelDent, or ClearDent)
- Up-to-date CPR/Basic Life Support (Level C or equivalent) and WHMIS; thorough knowledge of IPAC standards and sterilization practices
- Strong patient communication skills with ability to drive treatment acceptance and behavior change
- Demonstrated accuracy, time management, and attention to detail across back-to-back hygiene appointments
- Commitment to continuing education and adherence to Alberta legislation, standards of practice, and documentation requirements
